LOS ANGELES, Jan 15 (KATAKAMI.COM / ASIAONE) — AILING actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was to have most of her right leg amputated on Friday, the 93-year-old’s spokesman said, adding that otherwise she would die.
The flamboyant star – who was read the last rites during a health scare last year – was admitted to hospital just after New Year due to an infection, and had been treated with antibiotics.
But doctors decided they had no alternative but to remove her leg, as the infection had permeated into the bone. ‘This is a very dangerous operation for someone her age,’ said her spokesman John Blanchette.
‘But she will die otherwise,’ he added, saying that she would have about three quarters of her leg amputated.
A spokesman for the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center said the hospital would hold a press conference at 2pm (2200 GMT, 6am Singapore time) to give further information about the surgery.
The Hungarian-born actress was hospitalised last July after she fell and broke her hip. She underwent hip replacement surgery but suffered more complications, including a blood clot for which she had more surgery.
